STORY TIME IN DEERING: A DESTINATION!

Saturday mornings at 9:30 in the Schoolhouse Library. We'll read some books and stories. There will be treats and juice for the kids and coffee for their adult companions. Rain or shine we will meet. When it becomes too cold to meet in the Schoohouse Library, we will meet in Town Hall. Spread the word!

We have held two story sessions so far. While attendance has not exactly been standing room only, we did not go home early either. Books we've read so far have been aimed at the younger crowd, younger than 10. From all indications, the readings by one of the library trustees or a parent have been pretty well received. It was a lot of fun that we all could enjoy.

Apart from story time being fun, though, reading aloud can be one way to bring reluctant readers or kids who have difficulty focusing their attention, to reading. We try to stimulate curiosity and mutual interaction among the participants through the books. Did you know that the author of the highly popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Rick Riordan, actually began writing the series at the request of his own, then, pre-teen who was both dyslectic and afflicted by ADHD. This young lad just hated school and reading along with it. The Percy Jackson series brought author Riordan's son along.

We have not yet tried reading to this young adult group, the kids in their young teens, but our great wish is to have readings with them and the Deering library has the full five volume collection of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Come along on Saturday, no matter what age your kids are, and join in on the fun!
